Our Vision

"Vision is the art of seeing what is invisible to others"
The Bone and Body Research Centre™ was born out of the belief that genuine health and wellbeing can only be achieved through an integrative, polycultural approach to combating the diseases and disorders associated with modern living.

Our vision for the future of the BBRC is based upon a holistic model that combines traditional and indigenous knowledge and techniques with modern, scientific methods and best practice, and which regards each client as an individual with unique requirements.

Our first step on the road to realising this vision has been the establishment of a committee of dedicated, professional people with diverse skill-sets and shared beliefs. If our staff are our primary asset, our second most important resource is the extraordinary biodiversity of Manipur and the northeast region of India. These unique bio-resources are the raw materials from which our primary medicines and remedies are derived.

"Our vision for the future is to create, maintain and grow a multifaceted, multidisciplinary health and wellbeing centre dedicated to improving the lives of people in Manipur, in India and throughout the world."

It's clear that governments, regulatory bodies and private healthcare businesses are accepting the need for a more diverse approach to the provision of health and wellbeing services. This recognition is dependent on the condition that all new, potentially useful treatments and systems must establish their safety, quality and efficacy before being accepted into the healthcare mix. In practice, this means rigorous testing of new medicines and assessment of the effects of treatments and therapies.

We aim to meet these requirements through the establishment of a permanent research and training hospital to provide in-patient care for those in need and to teach a new generation of practitioners. We are also building a laboratory for trialing medicines and active compounds and a botanical repository for the conservation of the essential bio-resources.

Our vision for the future is to create, maintain and grow a multifaceted, multidisciplinary health and wellbeing centre dedicated to improving the lives of people in Manipur, in India and throughout the world. We hope you will join with us in helping to realise this vision.

Letter from the BBRC Founder

Vaidya Pukhrambam Kumarjit Singh
Dear Friends,

I founded the Bone and Body Research Centre in 2013. But the origins of the BBRC go back more than 30 years: in 1984 I established the Shihan Hiho Martial Arts Academy; and around the same time I took over leadership of the Manipur Ayurvedic Sammelan, an academic community concerned with the study of natural drugs and remedies.

Martial arts follow codified systems and traditions of combat which, when practised with care and discipline, aid the development of mental and physical fitness. Ayurveda is a holistic healthcare system which draws upon traditional resources and methodologies.

With advances in modern medicine, there can be a tendency to dismiss traditional and indigenous alternatives as ineffective or unscientific. However, as a qualified vaidya (Ayurvedic doctor) and martial arts grand master, I know this is not the case: throughout my career, I have shown how these two traditional disciplines can be employed to treat a wide range of diseases and debilitating conditions and improve general health and wellbeing.

Over the past half century, modern western societies have seen increasing problems with so-called 'diseases of affluence' such as obesity, high blood pressure, diabetes, osteoporosis and related muscular-skeletal conditions – not to mention depression and mental health issues. It's clear that a new approach is needed to arrest the proliferation of these modern illnesses.

"The BBRC seeks to bridge the gap between modern medical science and traditional techniques developed over millennia in Manipur and across the Indian subcontinent."

But it's not simply a case of pitting one system against the other: the BBRC seeks to bridge the gap between modern medical science and traditional techniques developed over millennia on the Indian subcontinent. Through an integrative approach which encompasses clinical, pharmacological and social sciences, we are developing affordable, effective and accessible strategies to enhance the health security of local communities and foreign visitors alike.

Key projects in which we are engaged include a botanical garden where rare, indigenous and high value medicinal plants are conserved and studied, a training clinic in Manipur's Imphal Valley, and an associated laboratory for the trialling of new medicines and active compounds.

Our small, dedicated Management Committee enables us to initiate projects from a single, central point and manage project funds in a transparent and accountable way. Our aim is to research, conserve, utilise and market products and techniques to improve the physical and mental health of our clients and patients worldwide and the economic health of local communities in Manipur.

Vaidya Pukhrambam Kumarjit Singh

Vaidya Pukhrambam Kumarjit Singh

Founder, President and Grand Master

As BBRC President, Kumarjit is senior consultant for all the Centre's projects and programmes and ultimately responsible for day-to-day management decisions. Kumarjit hails from a long line of traditional healthcare practitioners* with over 30 years experience practising Ayurveda, the Indian holistic healthcare system, and Maibarol, the indigenous Manipuri system of traditional medicine. As the son of another renowned vaidya he was, from a young age, exposed to the skills and knowledge associated with the manufacture and use of the medicines upon which these systems are based. He studied at the Research Institute of Indian Medicine in Barot, Himachal Pradesh, and in 1977 he graduated from Manipur Ayurved Tirtha and Maibarol Mahavidyalaya with a diploma in Ayurved Tirtha and a degree in traditional medicine (D.A.T.M). Founder of the Manipur Ayurvedic Sammelan, concerned with the development and use of natural drugs and remedies, he is President of Manipur Ayurvedic Mahavidyalaya, Manipur Ayurved Tirtha and Maibarol Mahavidyalaya, and a member of Ayurved Vikas Yojna (U.P.), India. As founder and Grand Master Shihan of the Shihan Hiho Martial Arts Academy, Kumarjit is also an expert in physical and musculoskeletal systems and therapies.

*A practitioner of Ayurveda is known in India as 'vaidya'; a practitioner of Maibarol is known in Manipur as 'maiba' (male) or 'maibi' (female).

Ringo

Ringo Paonam

Head of Musculoskeletal Treatments

A qualified osteopath and martial arts master, Ringo studied at the Manipur Ayurvedic Sammelan and the Shihan Hiho Martial Arts Academy under the instruction of BBRC President Kumarjit Singh. Ringo's professional skills and experience encompass both indigenous holistic healthcare systems and physical therapy techniques. He has a special interest in sports science and the development of traditional therapeutic programmes and rehabilitation procedures for professional sports people. Ringo has developed a unique system of osteopathy which focuses on the realignment of individual joints in the spine and body through physical manipulation and subsequent exercise regimes. These techniques combine bone, tendon and muscle work to return the body to its natural alignment and increase strength and stability. Ringo has been developing these techniques for over a decade, during which time he has studied modern, traditional and indigenous bone and body treatments at clinics and temples throughout Asia. As head of muskuloskeletal treatment at the BBRC, he is responsible for the development of the Centre's physical therapy programmes, including consultancy and training. A founder and board member of the Bone and Body Clinic™, Ringo divides his time between Manipur, 'mainland' India and Europe, where he operates seasonal clinics and consultancies.

Miranda Graham

Miranda Graham

Vice President and Head of Business Development

With a background in international events management and fund raising, Miranda worked in the business development sector for over 15 years, specialising in the Middle East and North Africa. In 2010, she sustained serious head trauma, facial paralysis and multiple spine and hip injuries following a road traffic accident in Goa, India. Despite access to conventional healthcare services, her injuries were only successfully relieved after she received emergency treatment and follow-up rehabilitation therapies from Ringo Paonam. Miranda then decided to dedicate her life to raising the profile and availability of these traditional healthcare systems. She has since trained in the essential rehabilitation stretching programme developed by Ringo and the Shihan Hiho Martial Arts Academy, and studied the principles of Ayurveda and Maibarol. A natural networker and multitasker, Miranda is a serial entrepreneur who has launched and helped grow a number of start-up businesses. The beating heart of the BBRC, she is responsible for developing the Centre from a specialist consultancy into a multifaceted integrative healthcare organisation. Miranda holds a BSc in Geography from the University of Sheffield, England. She is a co-founder and board member of the Bone and Body Clinic™. Originally from London, England, she and her husband Ringo now divide their time between India and Europe.
